What does It Really Mean to Be a Great Leader in Business?
It is always interesting to notice the one who is the leader in any group. There is a certain head up posture, a way of carrying themselves. Does buying books on leadership teach it to us, or is it just the select luck of human genetics? Does leadership in the age of Donald Trump’s resurgence and our current challenges in Iraq happen naturally or do you have to grow into it. The simple answer is both. In fact, strong leaders like Churchill have read tons of books and had mentors of various kinds over the years.
But, what is leadership and how do you boil it down to its core. Described best, it is the ability to move one or more people in a new and unique direction for a specific purpose. So you are probably asking, then does leadership really mean the talent to direct through persuasion or other means for people to follow? The answer, is Yes.
For years, scientists have drawn a link between high testosterone and great leadership. We have seen this same leadership connection with the brain neurotransmitter Serotonin being higher in leaders. At the same time without real leadership "skills”, the natural drives and talent from potential leaders with high testosterone and Serotonin can lead to eventual failure. Yet, people without high testosterone or excess Serotonin gifts, but who possess real skills, can trump the genetically gifted.
Given that the real power lies in “skills, how do we get real leadership skills and which skills are the most effective?
Leaders without people that follow them are like eagles with clipped wings. They just don't fly. So if leaders need people to be great leaders then what do the people that follow them get in exchange, which cause them to stay as followers?
1. They get a compelling, passionate view of the future. They get the ability to hear about the future as if it has already happened. They get to feel optimistic, confident about their potential as a part of a group and or of themselves.
2. They get resources that allow them to do their job effectively and efficiently.
3. They get praise and recognition when they get the job done and for being part of the team.
4. They are accountable when they do not achieve or follow the rules and face the consequences of their actions.
